Ceylon Tea Today

Ceylon Tea has a long history that goes back to the year 1867, when a Scotsman named James Taylor first commenced commercial tea planting in just 20 acres of land in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Today Ceylon tea is found growing in over 190,000 hectares of flourishing tea plantations in the main tea growing regions of Nuwara Eliya, Dimbulla, Uva, Kandy, Uda Pussellawa and Ruhuna. This accounts for approximately 4% of the country’s land area being covered in tea plantations.

Tea grows best at high altitudes of over 2,100m where the tea plants receive regular rainfall figures of more than 100-125cm making it the perfect climate for the production of high quality tea. Ceylon tea, known as the world’s finest accounts for almost 20% of the world’s exports and is the fourth largest producer in the world. Tea exports play a vital role in supporting the economy of the country while being a main source of foreign exchange. It also plays a very important function in providing both direct and auxiliary employment to over one million people, commencing from the tea picking process up to shipping and even after.

Pure Ceylon tea identified by the famous Lion Logo denotes that the tea is grown and manufactured entirely in Sri Lank, is of single origin and of the highest quality standards. Ceylon tea continues to have success in the international markets while retaining its position as the world’s top tea exporter. Great tasting Ceylon tea is the choice of discerning connoisseurs the world over.
